Launched in May 2008, the Pillar Society Speakers Series began with Dan Mulvenna’s compelling presentation on Gilles Brunet and the KGB’s infiltration of the RCMP Security Service. Since its inception, the series has expanded to showcase thirty outstanding presentations by recognized experts in their respective fields.

More than 6,000 attendees have participated in these events, which include members of Canada’s intelligence community, other government professionals, and the general public. The series consistently receives enthusiastic feedback, highlighting the exceptional calibre of its speakers and the enduring relevance of its topics.

All events are now hosted at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans, ON and take place each May and October.

    Sandy talks about this critical case

    Sandra Grimes is a 26 year veteran of the CIA's National Clandestine Service. This presentation has never been presented in Canada before and only on a few occasions in the United States. In a brutally frank account of CIA traitor Aldrich Ames's career, Sandra Grimes and the late Jeanne Vertefeuille, in their recent book, pulled back the curtain on the hunt for an American who spent nine years working for the KGB without being discovered.  Ames provided information to the Russians that led to the death of at least eight Soviet intelligence officers. The retired CIA officers recently published, Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor  Aldrich Ames And The Men He Betrayed.  Sandy passes away in 2025.

    Joby Warrick talks about this case

    Joby Warrick, Washington Post reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner, spoke about the suicide bombing in Khost, Afghanistan that killed a number of CIA officers. The bomber was a double agent who the CIA trusted and highlights numerous tradecraft errors. His best selling book “The Triple Agent” is a best seller.

    Spy Sites

    Keith Melton -  is a renowned military historian, author and expert on clandestine devices and equipment. He is recognized internationally as an authority on espionage paraphernalia and has assembled an unparalleled collection of spy devices, books, and papers of famous spies--a portion of which is currently on temporary display in the Cold War Exhibit within the headquarters of the CIA. Along with his impressive display of spy devices, Keith spoke about technology in the espionage world.  He used the recent arrest of ten illegals in the US to illustrate his points.

    Andrej Suvorov, a former KGB/SVR officer and Dan Mulvenna spoke about Soviet intelligence operations in Canada.  Andrej had personal knowledge of highly sensitive operations in Canada and the West.

    Jonna talks about disguises

    Tony and Jonna Mendez - former CIA disguise experts spoke on the use of disguises in operations in denied areas such as Russia.  Tony was the main CIA officer involved in exfiltrating 6 American diplomats from Tehran after the take over of the US Embassy.  This event was the subject of the movie ARGO.

    Jim Ohlson and Bob Hallman from the US National Security Agency spoke on the Bob Hanssen espionage case where Hanssen worked for the Russians for over 15 years resulting betrayal and execution of 10 US assets.

    Our first Speakers Series featured Dan Mulvenna speaking on the KGB penetration of the RCMP Security Service by Gilles Burnet, a member of the Security Service who was working on the Russian Desk.  His betrayal resulted in the compromise of many Service investigations spanning over 7 years.
