CSIS has provided a cautionary message to the NDP party in Alberta regarding foreign interference at the time of the possibility of an independent Alberta.

A letter to Alberta NDP Leader, Naheed Nenshi from CSIS suggested that they would keep him apprised of developments.  Director Rogers did express caution should be taken as the situation in Alberta develops.  In his reply to Nenshi he remarked "“Democratic events such as the upcoming referendum could create the conditions foreign actors seek to exploit, such as through the use of mis- and disinformation, to advance a narrative aligned with their objectives,”

An earlier national security threat prepared and distributed by CSIS consisted of the following.  

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has recently highlighted foreign interference and cybersecurity as primary national security threats.  In June 2026, CSIS issued a security alert warning that China’s military intelligence services are using professional networking sites and online job platforms to target Five Eyes nationals and government personnel. 

Key recent developments include:

• Arctic Threats: CSIS officials testified that China poses a greater economic security threat in the Arctic than Russia, citing concerns over predatory investments in critical minerals and infrastructure. 

• Legislative Powers: A new lawful access bill introduced in March 2026 would grant CSIS and police greater powers to track suspects' mobile phones and online activities. 

• Watchdog Criticism: The National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA) warned in June 2026 that CSIS risks stereotyping foreign nationals through its security screening "Non-Canadian Citizen Briefs" and noted failures to report potentially unlawful activities to the federal government. 

• Foreign Interference: CSIS confirmed that India remains one of the main perpetrators of foreign interference and espionage in Canada, contradicting recent government claims to the contrary. 

Tension is clearly growing in Alberta amongst similar concerns across Canada
